Pasar Payang to be demolished

K. Terengganu’s Pasar Payang to be demolished

One of the city's most famous landmarks, the Pasar Besar Payang is due to be demolished by the year's end to make way for a new market complex.

State tourism and culture committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jidin Shafee said a new complex would be built at the same site by next year following advice from the Public Works Department "

The PWD has declared the market complex unsafe and we have decided to build a new one for the safety of traders and visitors. "We will temporarily house the traders at Pulau Warisan while awaiting for the completion of the new complex," he said.

Mohd Jidin added that the traders were aware of the danger posed by the building and were supportive of the government's initiative, which will fund the construction of the new complex.

The two-storey Pasar Besar Kedai Payang, or the city's central market, is located by the Terengganu River adjacent to the Shahbandar Jetty that overlooks the South China Sea.

It is also close to Kampung Cina, or Chinatown. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kuala Terengganu. Housed in a modern building, it offers visitors a variety of traditional handicrafts such as batik, silk, songket, brocade and brassware, clothing, as well as fresh produce, fruits and grocery.

Visitors to this market have a delightful experience shopping for local products at reasonable prices. It is also a great place to experience the culture as locals do their daily shopping there.

The market got its name from the colloquial perahu payang (boats) that ferried the people around the islands. Hassan Malek, a frequent visitor, said that he had been shopping there since his childhood days. "

A firm favourite with locals and tourists alike, this market gets crowded and the roads leading to the market are congested on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

This is a one stop centre for great traditional Terengganu food like kerepok lekor, nasi dagang and various snacks," he said.

Senior citizen Siti Fatimah Omar, 78, said it was a great place to walk around and try something one had not done before. "

The traders sell a variety of food. My favourite is the KT shop on the second floor," she said.

Arnold Jones, a foreign tourist, said that the stalls were well organised and it had a clean and colourful environment. "I enjoyed browsing around, although it can be stuffy inside. The traders are friendly and courteous," he said. PIX - Kuala Terengganu's famous Pasar Besar Payang.
